When the Recovery product stewardship scheme began, it was funded, as most product stewardship schemes are, with Advance Destruction Fees paid by industry.
With amendments to the Emissions Trading Scheme several years ago, Recovery started to receive emissions units for the destruction of environmentally harmful refrigerants.
We are now at a point where we believe that the scheme can be self-funding from the value of these units. Based on that, we’re pleased to be able to announce that the trustees have decided to stop charging an Advance Destruction Fee, effective from 1 Jan 2022.
This is good news for the industry, as we will be one of the few industries that can achieve great environmental results under a regulated product stewardship regime without a cost burden on the sector. And this is despite planned network expansion to collect more volume, along with increased compliance, tracking and reporting costs.
We believe this decision is a big win for industry, the environment, and all New Zealanders.
